EnergySolutions Cited for Safety Lapse

State cites EnergySolutions for safety lapse

May 2nd, 2009 @ 2:57pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- State regulators have cited EnergySolutions for it part in a hazardous materials leak of radiation-tainted solvent from the duct-taped hose on a shipping tanker.

The Utah Division of Radiation Control issued a notice of violation to the company on Thursday. The agency is proposing a $2,500 fine and corrective action to make sure the violation isn't repeated.

Agency director Dane Finerfrock says regulations require shipments to remain intact while in transit.

The tanker was hauling about 3,000 gallons of toxic sludge between an EnergySolutions facility in Utah and an incinerator in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The leak was discovered at a weigh station in Price.

Carbon County officials found up to a half-gallon of material had come from the broken hose. No radiation was detected.
