Floods, cyclone to pummel Australian economy in 1Q
CANBERRA, Australia – Australia's economy accelerated at the end of last year but would slump in the current quarter due to record floods and a major cyclone that destroyed crops and inundated coal mines, the government said Wednesday.
The economy grew by 0.7 percent in the three months to Dec. 31 on the back of record prices for iron ore and other exports, gaining pace from a sluggish 0.1 percent rate in the September quarter, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures. Growth for all of 2010 reached 2.7 percent.
Treasurer Wayne Swan said growth for the last quarter would have been 0.4 of a percentage point faster if not for the flooding that began in Australia's northeast in late December and turned vast swaths of the east coast into disaster areas through January.
Swan said damage from the rains, compounded by a cyclone that hit already flooded northeast Queensland in February, would slash 7 billion Australian dollars ($7 billion) and 1 percentage point from economic growth in the three months through March.
"Because we are in a strong position, we can handle the savage impact of these natural disasters, particularly as it will be felt in the March quarter," Swan told Parliament.
The economy is expected to gather pace against from April as farm and coal exports pick up and billions of dollars are spent on rebuilding infrastructure such as ports, roads and train tracks.
The flooding killed 35 people, damaged or destroyed more than 35,000 houses, an inundated downtown Brisbane, Australia's second largest city.

Floods spur Muncie to declare a disaster

Muncie -- Authorities in Muncie have issued a disaster declaration because of the flooding in east-central Indiana.
Thursday's declaration comes as the area prepares for more rains tonight and Saturday.
Red Cross disaster assistance teams have been seeking out residents affected by flooding, with volunteers traveling through affected neighborhoods in Delaware and Jay counties. They've been conducting disaster assessments, distributing cleanup kits and providing emergency assistance.
Red Cross volunteers and caseworkers also are working out of the Portland Fire Department to provide relief to victims of flash-flooding that inundated the area after heavy rains Monday, The Star Press newspaper reported.
The damage in Jay County was estimated to be at least $4 million, according to Ralph Frazee, director of the county's Emergency Management Agency.

UFO Cover-Up? Britain's 'Roswell Event' Missing From Files
The British Ministry of Defence recently released thousands of government documents related to UFOsightings and reports in the United Kingdom. As the public and UFO buffs pored over the information, there was one subject file (or series of files) that seemed to be suspiciously missing: the Rendlesham Forest Incident, better known as "Britain's Roswell."
BBC correspondent Neil Henderson noted, "The missing files relate to a report of mysterious lights from U.S. servicemen at RAF [Royal Air Force] Woodbridge in Suffolk in 1980. The disappearance came to light with the release of 8,000 previously classified documents on UFOs. Officials found a 'huge' gap where defense intelligence files relating to the case should be, the papers show."

David Clarke, the author of "The UFO Files: The Inside Story of Real-Life Sightings" (The National Archives, 2009) who has been working with Britain's National Archives since 2008 to release the information, clarified the issue. "It is not the case that files on Rendlesham have been destroyed. What has been lost or destroyed are a series of Defence Intelligence UFO files covering the years 1980 through 1982," he told Life's Little Mysteries. While this would include information on the Rendlesham case, Clarke noted, the Ministry of Defence's files on the topic had already been released. "There is no evidence those files contained anything different to the contents of the actual 'Rendlesham file' released some years ago."
But is it suspicious that any files were destroyed? Perhaps they contained conclusive proof of alien visitation? Clarke doesn't think so: "Why were these files destroyed? The most likely answer is that, at the time, intelligence staff believed they contained nothing worth preserving. It's worth pointing out that some 95 percent of all U.K. government files are destroyed at first review. Many, many other UFO files have been destroyed, including most of those from the 1950s when the subject was regarded as having no historical significance (prior to 1967, the policy was to destroy all files on the subject at five yearly intervals). An amateur video that purports to show a UFO hovering in the clouds made headlines in Brazil.
Thousands of files with details of UFO sightings and an "alien abduction" in London have been released for the first time by the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD).
The previously classified files contain more than 8,500 pages that reveal the UFO phenomenon has been discussed at the highest levels of governments worldwide -- and in 1979 the UK House of Lords held Parliament's only ever full debate among lawmakers on the subject, Sky News reported.
The files, which also contain pictures, described how for a few hours in 1967 a "War Of The Worlds"-style incident was treated as a potentially real alien invasion of the UK.
Another startling revelation: In the months before the September 11 attacks in 2001, 15 unidentified aircraft were detected on radar approaching the UK, one detected on the actual day. In another case a man told the MoD he believed he had been beamed up by an alien craft from his home in southwest London.
The files contain pages of UFO sightings and reports, color photographs and drawings, UK Royal Air Force investigations, unusual radar detections, briefings to lawmakers and -- for the first time -- documents on the government's policy on UFOs.

UFO sightings and an "alien abduction" are detailed in thousands of close-encounter documents released by the National Archives.
Previously classified documents reveal the UFO phenomenon was discussed at the highest level of government worldwide.
In December 1977, the Government used its influence to talk down a call by Grenada president Sir Eric Gairy for a UN agency to conduct research into alien sightings.
About a year later, the House of Lords held a debate on the subject of UFOs, the files show.
One of the documents describes a "War of the Worlds" incident in 1967 that was treated as a potentially real alien invasion of the UK.
The RAF was flooded with calls from the public reporting six small "flying saucers" discovered in locations in a perfect line across southern England.
Four police forces, bomb disposal units, the army and the Ministry of Defence's intelligence branch were all mobilised.
But it later emerged the saucers were a 'rag-day' hoax by engineering students from Farnborough Technical College.
Another file tells of a family capturing on film flashing red and white lights zig-zagging their way through the sky in 2003.

Police officers, including a helicopter team, also witnessed the 20 to 30 lights over Bromley, Kent, and reported the incident. Radar checks revealed nothing unusual.
The documents read: "A policeman sent to investigate confirmed the sighting. Objects were moving faster than any man-made aircraft."
In another case, a man told the MoD he believed he had been beamed up by an alien craft from his home in Barnes, southwest London.
He described having a glass of milk in his garden on a night in October 1998 and "after a few moments I heard a distant roar of engines getting louder and louder".
The man said he was terrified as a huge "cigar-shaped vehicle" appeared over his house and said it felt like he had gained a whole hour.
"I am now beginning to wonder if I was abducted," he told the MoD, which replied that the clocks had gone back the night before.

The files also detail the Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and letters from "persistent enquirers" that led to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) opening up its files.
Dr David Clarke, author of the book The UFO Files, said since the introduction of the FOI Act, questions on UFOs were the top three most popular FOI requests received by the MoD.
He said: "You can see from the files that I wasn't the only one interested in the subject, with the phenomenon discussed at the highest level of government right across the globe."

It sounded like a story dreamed up by a little boy. But to understand what Colton Burpo said, you have to hear his journey.
It all started on a trip to Colorado. Colton complained of a stomach ache. After a trip to the doctor, his diagnosis was the flu.
Back home in Nebraska, another doctor's visit, but still no improvement. Then, Colton went downhill fast.
It turns out, he was misdiagnosed. The then-three-year-old had a ruptured appendix.
While in surgery, his parents, Todd and Sonya, prayed in separate rooms. They thought they had lost their little boy.
After a difficult recovery, Colton survived, but the things Colton did and said after the surgery were out of the ordinary.
Until a drive past the hospital, four months after surgery, none of it made sense. His dad jokingly asked Colton if he wanted to go back to the hospital.
Todd said, "I'm looking at him in the mirror, and he says that the angels sang to me. I looked and he is just dead serious."
While in heaven, Colton says he saw many things and met many people, including Pop, his great-grandfather, who died 30 years before Colton was born.
But Colton says he didn't look like the photo in his house. A picture sent months later by his grandmother was more like the man he met, a young man without glasses.
The most surprising part of Colton's story was when Colton confessed to his mother that he had more than one sister. But he only has one sister. His parents never told him about the miscarriage.
Colton says, "She looked familiar and she started giving me hugs and told me she was glad to have someone from her family up there."
Over time, the young man's visions became more real, from his description of Jesus, to his talks with God, even a discussion about Armageddon.
The Burpo family has accepted and embraced their little boy's unbelievable story. They put the words on pages and prayed for guidance.
Todd says, "I kind of laid my fleece down. I don't know how to publish a book, but if you really want me to do this, you're going to have to have the publishing industry find me."
And somehow that happened. So far, 500,000 books have been printed. Bookstores across the country are trying to get more copies.
They're on eBook readers, audio tape, and it made the New York Times Bestseller list. And now Colton, now 11, continues to share his testimony of what he says he saw in heaven.
Todd says, "I don't know why He picked us. God did a remarkable miracle for us."
Is heaven for real? If you're a person of faith, you may accept this as a real experience, or you may opt for a more medical or scientific explanation, like an overactive dream state.
As for the Burpo family, they now have renewed faith that you will eventually be reunited with your loved ones, and that heaven is for real.
